Beaches Amateur Radio Society Meeting, June 27, 2013
The meeting began at 7:00 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance. President Richard Barsky WA1GZY conducted the meeting.
Eleven members and one guest were present.
Treasurer’s report: Carol Barsky KA9SOF gave the report in the treasurer’s absence. One member paid dues in May. The checking account balance is $435.07, and the savings balance is $5.00. Insurance has been paid.
Secretary Carol Barsky read the minutes of the May meeting, and the minutes were approved.
Members reported on Field Day activities. There were 5 alpha stations and 30 hams and 7 visitors. From 2:00 p.m. on Saturday June 22 through 2:00 p.m. on Sunday June 23, 490 contacts were made with 44 states. On Sunday, 6 meters opened and was very active.
Scott Freudenthal K2LSF reported on the June 8 triathlon. There were 8 volunteers, and they used simplex. They tried to use APRS, 5 watts, but it did not work, so there were no packets—voice only.
Wyman Richardson AA4FW and Scott K2LSF said that there is no activity yet with the repeater repair. The 88 repeater is now D star but still has some problems with range.
There was a discussion about using encryption/decryption by hams in emergencies and protecting sensitive information.
The St. Augustine Amateur Radio Society plans to set up a station on August 17 at the St. Augustine Lighthouse for the Lighthouse Day. Volunteers are needed. Contact Doug WF4B by July 8. Several BARS members expressed interest.
Scott demonstrated construction of his quadcopter and showed a video.
John Young WA8KNE said that his raspberry pi can transit now, and he provided details.
Rich reminded members about the club breakfast on Saturday July 6 at 8:00 a.m. at the Golden Corral on Beach Boulevard.
