Meeting minutes August 22, 2013
The meeting began at 7:00 p.m. President Richard Barsky WA1GZY conducted the meeting. Ten members and two guests attended the meeting.
There was no treasurer report.
Secretary Carol Barsky KA9SOF read the minutes of the July meeting. The minutes were approved.
Rich WA1GZY said that RemoteRig.com now works with any transceiver that has a remote head. There is an app called Foxfi that you can use to create a free hot spot for seven minutes or pay $7 for unlimited time. RemoteShack.com uses home phone lines. Superstation subscriptions for operating a remote base start at $2000. A remote head is included with subscriptions.
Wyman Richardson AA4FW noted that the 45 repeater has been wired and should be ready in October.
Rich WA1GZY talked about extended side band on 14.178 for transmissions 4 KC wide. The hams operating on that frequency can advise on setting up audio, give objective reports on processor use, and can send a recording of your audio to you.
He also said that John Clark KE4CRR bought a KX3 transceiver kit. It operates at 8 watts on pen cells, and it has a low noise level.
John Young WA8KNE discussed the noise level using a Flex 1500. He could see the noise level, so he took a toroid and found another way to wind it. He noted a 30 dB drop in noise, and above 40 m, flat line noise.
Rich WA1GZY mentioned that he recently purchased ARRL insurance for his equipment. It only costs $1.40 per $100 of value of equipment.
Billie Davies N3GBZ sent a message to Rich to remind everyone about the Shelby, North Carolina Ham Fest on Labor Day Weekend.
Wyman AA4FW attended the Huntsville, Alabama Ham Fest.
John WA8KNE said that the Melbourne Ham Fest will take place in October, and he said that there is often a lot of equipment from estate sales.
Miller Norton W4ENM talked about the possibility of moving the BARS meetings for next year to a Beach location. The Beaches Library is a possible location. Scott Freudenthal K2LSF suggested trying a club breakfast at the Beaches this fall.
Scott K2LSF brought his quadcopter to the meeting and showed the camera servo with a gyroscope that he added. He demonstrated the camera to show the picture quality.
Vice President Ed Maxted KE4NMG stated that the September BARS meeting will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Penman Road on September 26.
